Duke of Edinburgh in Snowdonia National Park

From Saturday 3rd to Tuesday 6th July, some of our plucky Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award groupssuccessfully completed their Assessment in the Wilds of the Snowdonia National Park. It was a difficult four days and three nights camping, especially as the students had to endure one nights wild camping, with none of the ‘luxuries’ that you normally find on a campsite.  Click HERE to be diverted to the Duke of Edinburgh page for the full article.

Boscobel House Trip

The History Department Ran its annual trip to the Civil War re-enactment Camp at Boscobel House in June. 30 eager Year 8 students jumped at the opportunity to find out what life was like for the soldiers and civilians during the Civil War. Click HERE to view the full article.

History Club to Victorian Wellington

History Club visited Wellington in order to look at the Victorian history of our local area.  We were very lucky to secure the attendance of local historian and expert Allan Frost.  Allan has written several books on the local area such as ‘Death and Disaster in Victorian Telford’.  Pupils looked at buildings now and were able to compare them to photographs from the past.  Pupils were also able to go into Wellington library, which used to be a workhouse.  Jim Hatfield showed us around the library and was able to show students books on local history.  The day was a most interesting experience and enabled students to look at the history of their local area.

Magistrates Court Mock Trial Competition Sunday 13th March

Year 9 students attended a Mock Trial Competition on Saturday 13 March at the Telford Courts.  This is a highly prestigious competition organised by the Citizenship Foundation.  Its purpose is to show how important the Magistrates Courts are to our legal system and to give students a hands-on experience of how the courts operate.

The University of Wolverhampton: Year 9 Languages Day

The ‘Routes into Languages’ project is a consortium of universities which work together with schools and colleges to enthuse and encourage people to study languages. As part of the project fifteen Year 9 students were invited to attend a Languages Day at the University of Wolverhampton on January 18 2010. Having travelled by train to Wolverhampton, the day began with an address by representatives from local companies who make use of a foreign language in order to do business abroad.  One of the speakers, Mike Ridgway the Commercial Director if GKN AutoStructures in Telford has also agreed to come and speak to all BRJ Year 9 pupils later this year on the importance of continuing with a Foreign Language beyond KS3. Magistrates Court Mock Trial Competition

After the success of last year’s Crown Court Competition the History department has decided to get involved in the Magistrates Court Competition for younger students.  As part of their preparation for the trial itself year 9 students were taken to Telford Magistrates Court to witness the court in action.  Alec Beyer, a local magistrate, gave students a tour of the courts and was able to explain procedures and sentencing.  Students then watched how magistrates dealt with three cases.  Students were able to ask magistrates questions. This was an inspiring visit; the students are now very keen to do well in the competition.  The students were a credit to the school.
