Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Bronze - Equipment

Below is a list of equipment you should consider taking on a Daywalks, Practice or Assessment Expeditions, items marked with aare a must. Depending on the Award level, and therefore the length of the Expedition, more or less equipment will need to be taken. The Instructors will advise you further.


Practice and Assessment Expedition Equipment

Personal Clothing
Walking Boots- ankle supporting with good treads, no DMs.
Socks- new pair every day? One or two pairs with walking boots?
Leggings/Trousers- should be quick drying cotton, no jeans.
Underwear- comfortable and supporting. A new pair every day?
T-Shirts- a base layer to wick away moisture, ideally polyester.
Thick Shirts - a thermal layer used to retain heat.
Jumpers or Fleeces- a thermal layer used to retain heat.
Waterproof Jacket- a shell layer. Waterproof not showerproof.
Waterproof Trousers - these should fit over your boots.
Gloves and Hat- it's cold on those mountains and at night.
Gaiters - wonderful in wet or muddy conditions.

Personal Emergency Clothing
Personal emergency clothing should be sealed in a plastic bag and ONLY used
for emergencies while walking. They can however be used in camp IF they do
not get wet and they must be resealed in the plastic bag while walking.

Personal Equipment
Wash Kit- bring it and use it!
Toilet Paper - try to get biodegradable.
S.T.'s
Food- see Section 8 of the Teaching Notes.
Emergency Food- see Section 8 of the Teaching Notes.
Mug And Plate- carry light plastic ones.
Knife, Fork and Spoon- how else will you eat?
Water Container- it should be a minimum of 1 litre.
Waterproof Matches- Two packs to light that stove.
Torch- with spare batteries and bulbs and a red filter.
Watch/Alarm clock - how else will you get up at 4.30 am?
Spare Laces - its a bummer if you don't have spares.
Tin Opener - you're taking tins?!
Pen Knife - for taking stones out of a hoofs.

Personal Camping Equipment
Rucksack- 75 litres with a frame. Supplied by the Centre.
Sleeping Bag- min 3 season bag. Not one used for 'sleep overs'.
Sleeping Mat- insulation from the ground. Supplied by the Centre.
Emergency Whistle- helps to get help.
Bivi Bag- for those emergencies.

Group Camping Equipment
Tent(s)- a wendy house is not suitable. Supplied by the Centre.
Stove(s)- Trangias can be supplied by the Centre.
Fuel- meths can be supplied by the Centre.
Map- where are you going? Supplied by the Centre.
Compass- see above. This is supplied by the Centre.
Rubbish Bags - don't burn or bury it. Take it home.
Map Case - stop that map from getting wet.
Washing Up Liquid and Cloth - but don't wash up in streams or lakes.
Checkpoint Cards- including pencil, plastic bag and string.

Adhesive Dressing Strip 30 * 6 cm
Medium Sized Wound Dressing
Melolin Squares
Triangular Bandage
Antiseptic Cream and Sun Block
Crepe Bandage
Anti Midge Cream
Large Safety Pins, Small Scissors, Tweezers
Paracetamol Tablets
Calamine Cream
Second Skin
Note Pad and Paper
Zinc Oxide Plaster
