Emmaus Centre

"The work of the Emmaus centre with Key Stage 3 students effectively helps students acquire key learning skills and attitudes that will help them cope better in mainstream classes, as well as reinforcing basic English and mathematics skills." - Oftsed 2010

...everyting you need to know about our inclusion unit

 What is the Emmaus Centre?
We are an inclusion centre set up by the school to give support for students in both  key stage 3 and 4.

Where is the Emmaus Centre?
We are situated at the top of school in the bungalow . Next to parking for the mini bus.

Who works there.
Mr Welsh and Mrs Potts are the full time staff and they work closely with the Head of Years, but a lot of staff are timetabled for a lesson. The team also work closely with outside agencies to give the best quality support to our students.

Which students go in to the Emmaus ?
Students in key stage 3 who have been experiencing difficulties in BRJ, this could be with attendance, school phobia, social skills or challenging behaviour.

How are students considered?
Concerns are taken from form tutors who then during their year meeting will pass on the information to the Heads of year. This is then discussed during the Head of Years meeting. Then the mix of the group is decided in advance and parents are informed.

Key stage 3 support.
We are able to offer a six week course for student experiencing behavioural difficulties in mainstream school. Behaviour is commonly linked with poor or bad actions, we use the term behaviour as the way we act. The course works on class room management, behaviour management, self esteem work, confidence building, anti bullying, anger management and relaxation techniques.

Key Stage 3 Course

Our aim with all students is to return them to mainstream school where their needs are in a better position to be met and they are able to access their full potential.

Project Work In the Emmaus Centre we have found the best way to educate the students is in week long open-ended projects so that students can work to their own ability while covering a range of skills and projects.

Days structure.

Lessons 1 and 2 are intense formal writing lessons. This is used to help teach class room management, reinforcing the school rules, taking responsibility for individual learning and increasing concentration. Individual Counseling is offered during this time for current and past Emmaus students.

Break Time is in the centre, we have found that although this can make things very intense there are no outside influences to undo any of the amazing work being achieved.

Lesson 3 Circle time. Circle time is where students can look at their individual behaviour and make steps to improve. The program  covers self awareness, anger management, bullying, relaxation and communication skills.

Lesson 4 Careers Work, students use Fast Tomato web based site to help them make short and long term goals.

Lunch We strongly believe in the family style lunch where students and staff eat together at the table. This helps to improve manners and communication and more importantly it is a time to talk about the day.

Lesson 5 We have found that concentration levels drop in the afternoon so we have found the more artistic parts of the project are more enjoyed during this time.

Home time or Lesson Six Students home time is 3.15 but if the students have not accessed a lesson we encourage the student to re take the lesson that day during lesson six.

The Course duration The course will run for six weeks. The first four are intense and in the Emmaus Centre. Week 5 the students go back into mainstream school lessons 2 and 3. Week 6 the students go back into lessons 1 to 4 returning for break and lunch time as well as lesson 5, this helps to reintegrate students back to mainstream. Each student will have an aftercare book which needs to be signed by each teacher so that instant feed back can come to the Emmaus staff and parents.

Emmaus Staff work closely with parents and guardians, this can be on the phone or better still in person. Staff are available to do home visits after school. We believe in order to help the student in the best way school and home need to be helping each other.

This is why the daily report card and after care book is so important, parents are able to see on a daily bases their children's progress.

Key Stage 4 support
Once a year we  run a course work catch up session. This is where we can give support for students who need a little extra help completing course work or getting the grades they are capable of achieving.
