English "Nothing ever becomes real till it is experienced.” - John Keats The English Department consists of four specialist English Teachers Mrs McCarthy - Head of English The overall aim of the department is to provide all students with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to read, write, speak and listen effectively. In order to achieve this we aim to provide an engaging and challenging programme of study that encompasses the National Curriculum for English. In addition we will promote literacy through implementation of the New Framework for English and through the provision of high quality teaching and learning experiences that enable students to develop sophisticated literacy skills. We also aim to promote high levels of attainment and good standards of behaviour. Furthermore, we aim to cultivate in students a genuine interest in the subject, particularly an appreciation of our shared cultural heritage, a love of reading and an appreciation of the richness and diversity of English language and literature. Where possible, these aims will be reflected in extra-curricular activities such as theatre trips, drama workshops, reading promotion and through cross-curricular links. We will continue to foster links that will help us to achieve these aims: through liaison with key feeder primary schools, partnership with parents and by consulting with others including the LEA, DfES, QCA examination boards and expert groups such as NATE and the Basic Skills Agency.
