Civil War Encampment

Civil War Encampment
By Matthew Clarke

A group of year 8 students visited Boscobel House for a Civil War encampment.

We saw lots of actors dressed as members of Captain Bagot’s Regiment.

We could talk to the actors about the lives of the different people. There were all aspects of a regiment and the people that would follow the army on route. We got to speak to a range of weapon makers and armour makers as well as the civilian people with the army, like the landlord of the pub and the ladies who make cook all of the food for the army.

Whilst we were there we got to train up as Pikemen, which was great fun. We also got to watch as the soldiers fired their musket rifles. The rifles made a very loud noise which surprised a lot of people and made them jump. We were also lucky enough to get to try on some of the armour and handle some of the weapons. They wouldn’t let us try any of the ale in the pub however!!!

We learnt a lot about what life was like for the soldiers during the English Civil War and also for the people who would follow the army.
