Slavery Trip to Liverpool Maritime Museum

Slavery Trip to Liverpool Maritime Museum
Written by Mollie Rowley and Emma Tucker

We went on a History trip to Liverpool Maritime Museum.

We were split into 2 groups.  In the 1st session we looked at objects used in the slave trade – we were allowed to touch them and even allowed to try on some of the clothes!  The chains and branding irons were horrible – we really got an idea on how horrible it was for them.

In the other session, we had a tour around the exhibition where they had dark rooms made to look like boughs of ships where the slaves were kept.

It was a really eye opening trip.  I think in a way you can take for granted the conditions they were kept in, but actually experiencing it and hearing stories about the Africans and how badly they were treated really made you think.

When we got to Liverpool, we were split into 2 groups – 1 group looked around the museum and my group went to a room where a guide talked to us about the slavery in Africa and she showed us some artefacts.

After lunch it was our turn to look around the museum – it was really good – we were able to see what it was like for the people who lived on the boats.

It was a very exciting day and it showed me what it was like to be a slave to people.
