Shrewsbury Mock Trial Competition

Hatchers Solicitors in conjunction with Cornwall Street Chambers, Shrewsbury
Mock Trial Competition

Pupils from BRJ attended this prestigious competition for the first time on Saturday 22 November.   BRJ took part in two trials against Moreton Hall School and Adcote School.  The pupils performed the roles of jury, usher, clerk, court reporter, witnesses, defendant and barristers.  Each trial and each role was marked by a real trial judge.

Preparation for the roles was intense and pupils put in a great deal of effort at lunchtimes and after school.  The pupils were supported by Rita Salem in year 13 and Max Bennett our designated barrister.

The pupils wrote their roles themselves and got to know their characters well.  Pupils then, had to act out these roles at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

Despite competition from schools who had entered the competition before BRJ did very well.  Evelyn Philip, Alex Bell and Dominic Howarth were awarded best jury prizes.  Ali Dummett was awarded the Best Court Usher prize.  Sylvia Salem was awarded The Outstanding Advocate prize and was highlighted by the judge for her excellent performance which reflected her preparation and willingness to respond to the evidence rather than reading from a script.
