HOMEWORK POLICY
AIMS
This policy aims to identify a clear educational direction for our work rooted in the values of the Gospel and upheld by our college Mission Statement. Its intention is to make explicit to all of our college community our commitment to homework and extended learning. Whilst the commitment to our shared values remains steadfast we recognise the ongoing need to review this policy in light of educational research and legislation.
The Blessed Robert Johnson Catholic College Mission Statement states that it is dedicated to:
Embracing the values of the Gospel, celebrating the uniqueness and worth of every person, building relationships based on trust, respect, love and justice, working together so that everyone can experience life in all its fullness.
“I have come so that you may have life and have it to the full.” John 10:10
As such our commitments within the Mission Statement include:
- Promoting an inclusive community where all can achieve
- Supporting students in their personal organisation and independent study
- Encouraging high expectations of every individual
- To further develop the home-school partnership.
As a school committed to raising standards and driving forward improvements our focus is promoting homework as an essential part of a good education. We see homework as a way of assisting pupils in their enthusiasm and skills needed for successful lifelong learning. We endeavour to help pupils to extend their classroom learning so that they may pursue their own interests of study.
CORE PRINCIPLES:
Homework is a piece/s of work or an activity which students are asked to do outside lesson time, either within school or at home, on their own or with the support of parents or carers.
We recognise that homework is most effective when it provides opportunities for pupils to work towards improving important skills, attributes and understanding needed for successful lifelong learning.
PUTTING PRINCIPLES INTO PRACTICE
We recognise that homework is only part of an extended learning programme. Students are encouraged to extend their learning in many ways in addition to the completion of homework, such as attendance at after school or lunchtime clubs, internet, LRC, sports activities, trips, visits, school council, revision sessions, mentoring sessions and prefect roles. All of which contribute to the students’ extended learning experience.
BRJ currently operates a homework timetable system.
At Key Stage 3 students will receive 2 formal assessed pieces of homework per Half term in each subject. In addition to this, core subjects will set supplementary homework at their discretion to support classwork, practice skills or to encourage their independent research. Subject teachers will, where necessary, provide students with guidance on time to be spent completing homework.
Students working in the Emmaus Centre will be set daily homework and be expected to spend 30 minutes completing it.
For those students who require additional support for their literacy skills they will be set homework on a weekly basis and will be required to read for at least 15 minutes each day. Literacy programme homework booklets provide and explain homework tasks.
At Key Stage 4 students will be set homework more frequently than at KS3 with a minimum of 2 formal assessed pieces of homework per Half Term as students are preparing for externally accredited courses. Again, subject teachers will, where necessary, provide students with guidance on time to be spent completing homework.
At Key Stage 5 students will be set homework at the subject teacher’s discretion and this may take a range of forms, including coursework, timed exam questions and essay writing. Several pieces of homework may be set in one subject area per week.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Students are responsible for recording their homework in their planners including the date that homework should be returned to the teacher. Students are responsible for making sure they understand the work that has been set and asking for additional support from the teacher in advance of the deadline. Planners should be brought to school each day and should be available for use in every lesson. Students are expected to complete their homework to the best of their ability and to hand it in on time. If homework is completed electronically it should be printed off and handed to the teacher.
Subject teachers should set homework tasks that are appropriate to the abilities of their students and should be related to work covered in lessons where possible. All homework should be marked in line with the school’s assessment and marking policy and returned to students at the first available opportunity. It may be appropriate for work to be peer or self assessed. Advice on the length of time for homework tasks should be recommended where possible. Teachers have the responsibility for ensuring that the work set is reasonable for the time specified.
Heads of Department (HODs) provide effective leadership and management to promote the development of learning and teaching and this includes homework. It is the HODS responsibility to monitor the setting, quality and frequency of homework across the department. It is the responsibility of the subject teacher and Head of Department to monitor the completion of homework and to follow up any issues promptly using a range of sanctions including communication with parents.
Senior Leadership Team (SLT) enable teachers to provide high quality learning and teaching and support HODs to provide effective leadership and management.
Governors’ role is to support the SLT in the review process and enable the SLT to make objective judgements about the impact of this policy.
Parents have a valuable role in supporting and encouraging participation in extended learning in all its forms, including homework. Family members can help guide and participate in extended learning or homework as students are not expected to complete tasks or activities entirely independently, unless directed specifically by the teacher.
The education of our students is a shared responsibility between home and school. The availability of extended learning activities through the school and the homework timetable provide a vehicle for establishing a working partnership.
Homework or extended learning activities undertaken away from school can be undertaken through any language and students are encouraged to use their home language if they wish. (Written responses will need to be in the language intended by the teacher.)
We value the contributions, successes and concerns raised by all and urge families to contact the school with these.
Parents are expected to sign the school planner weekly to show that they are aware of the homework set.
MEASURING PROGRESS IN HOMEWORK
MONITORING:
Homework will be regularly monitored by a variety of methods such as student surveys, planner checks, book trawls and staff record surveys. Findings will always be circulated to the relevant staff and their line managers. Actions will be planned based on the findings
EVALUATION takes place between June and September. Using all observation data judgements are made about the overall quality of homework and its completion at a school, department and individual level.
REVIEW takes place following the evaluation to consider the impact of the Homework Policy on standards across the school. Measures are put in place to address the findings of the review in readiness for the following academic year.

Notes for Parents
- The 6 week timetable above indicates when homework will be set in a particular subject over the course of approximately one Half Term. It is designed so that Year 7 students receive and record at least 2 pieces of homework during this time in each subject. This 6-weekly timetable will run throughout the year with week 1 following on from week 6. Although subject areas will endeavour to follow the timetable, on some occasions this may not be possible, due to timetabling constraints or other unforeseen circumstances and so homework will be issued at the earliest opportunity thereafter.
- A subject teacher may choose to set additional homework at his/her discretion, particularly in core subject areas.
- Please keep a close check on your son/daughter’s personal planner. It will be used to record homework.
- The homework set may be to consolidate work done in class, to leave students to pursue their own lines of enquiry or to prepare work for a following lesson.
- There are many ways that you as parents can help your son/daughter: encouraging and supporting; checking presentation, handwriting and spelling; testing what has been set to be learnt; listening to them reading their written work; asking them to explain what they have been studying.
- The amount of time to be spent on homework will vary depending on the piece of work students have been asked to complete. Subject teachers will provide guidance but please encourage your son/daughter to ask if they are unsure.
