Modern Foreign Languages Extra-curricular activities Year 7 French Exchange Visit:
The Department of Modern Foreign Languages organizes an annual five day visit to Wellington’s Twin Town, Châtenay-Malabry, in June. Châtenay is approximately 20 minutes to the south of Paris, and with the help of Wellington’s Twinning Association, the MFL Department has established links with a Catholic 11 – 18 College, Ecole Sophie Barat, in Châtenay-Malabry. For the last three years Year 7 pupils have taken part in this very enjoyable exchange visit to the school and in June 2008 fifty year 7 students took part. The visit includes a morning in our partner school, attending lessons with their partners. BRJ pupils also take part in a day trip with French partners to the Palace of Versailles and a small local shopping centre as well as the day spent in the heart of Paris. BRJ is host to the French party in March and French pupils enjoy time spent with a BRJ pupil and family, trips to Blists Hill, Enginuity and Cosford Air Museum alongside taking part in lessons and a Year 7 Disco at the College. After school Latin classes: The MFL Department run after school Latin classes, on a Thursday evening from 3:30 – 4:15. The aim of the Cambridge Latin course is to teach reading comprehension and to develop and understanding of the history and culture of the Roman civilisation. The self-access course includes a series of textbooks and electronic materials which provide a wide range of inter-active activities. Will Griffiths the Director of the Cambridge Latin course has travelled to BRJ from Cambridge on two occasions to address meetings and answer questions. After school GCSE conversation classes: The MFL Department run weekly after school French and Spanish conversation classes for GCSE students. The classes are run as voluntary drop-in sessions but attendance has a very positive impact on attainment in the final GCSE oral examinations. Theatre Visits: The Onatti Company at BRJ The MFL Department organize annual visits from the Onatti Theatre Company. The plays are performed by native speaker actors entirely in French or Spanish. The shows are open to all KS3 students and GCSE linguists and performances are regularly booked out.
Cinema Visits: The MFL Department organize visits to the Old Market Hall Cinema in Shrewsbury to see films in their original French or Spanish. These visits are open to KS4 and KS5 students and are a great way of boosting enjoyment of language learning as well as enhancing cultural understanding.
