Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum at KS3:
On entry to BRJ pupils in Year 7 fill in a questionnaire regarding which languages have been studied at KS2 and the language background of each child. Pupils are given the opportunity to express a preference for either French or Spanish as their first language, which they will study for two hours a week in Years 7 – 9. In year 8 the majority of pupils study a second language (French or Spanish) for an additional hour per week in Year 8 and Year 9. Teachers of French and Spanish at BRJ use a variety of methods to engage our pupils in their learning. Much of the work at KS3 is centred on topics and based on differentiated course books; Expo for French and Mira for Spanish. The course books provide a range of written and recorded materials but are not used exclusively in our teaching. Rôle play is used extensively to encourage the use of spoken language and digital media enhances the presentation of new topics. A variety of language games are used to maintain enjoyment and to encourage active participation by all members of the class. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively on class projects and to take responsibility for their personal progress.
