Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum at KS4:
Although not part of the core curriculum, Modern Foreign Languages form part of the entitlement subjects at KS4. As part of a well balanced and broad curriculum students are encouraged to consider opting to continue the study of at least one language beyond Year 9. The GCSE course builds on and develops prior learning at KS3 and is largely topic based. Students are taught in comparatively small groups and have plenty of opportunity for personalised learning which caters for all levels of ability. Students are entered for the OCR examination and take final examinations in Listening, Reading and Speaking. The written aspect of the course is assessed through two pieces of coursework and a piece of writing carried out under examination conditions. A range of materials are used to supplement the course book and lessons are structured to develop all four language skills, each of which is worth 25% of the overall GCSE grade. Wolverhampton University Language Mentor working with a BRJ pupil
Students have the opportunity of working with Language Undergraduates from the University of Wolverhampton on a regular basis. Two students in their final year work with our students in small groups for conversation practice and individualised support in preparation for their final oral examination. This is an invaluable opportunity which increases pupil confidence when using the language for real purposes.
