The University of Wolverhampton: Year 9 Languages Day

1

The ‘Routes into Languages’ project is a consortium of universities which work together with schools and colleges to enthuse and encourage people to study languages. As part of the project fifteen Year 9 students were invited to attend a Languages Day at the University of Wolverhampton on January 18 2010. Having travelled by train to Wolverhampton, the day began with an address by representatives from local companies who make use of a foreign language in order to do business abroad.  One of the speakers, Mike Ridgway the Commercial Director if GKN AutoStructures in Telford has also agreed to come and speak to all BRJ Year 9 pupils later this year on the importance of continuing with a Foreign Language beyond KS3.

The pupils took part in French and Spanish activities which were lead by University Language Lecturers. Students from schools across Wolverhampton, Telford and Shrewsbury were presented with the challenge of preparing TV and magazine advertisements for a typically French/Spanish product. Holy-Anne McManus, Paige Bleasby, Bonnie Morgan and Cameron Leith were the overall winners of the ‘best-video category’ for their amusing and catchy ‘Orangina’ advert. The group were presented with ‘Routes into Languages’ mugs and Linda Townsend, Learning Programme Co-coordinator for Languages at the University was very impressed by our student’s imaginative and confident use of French and Spanish.
