MATHEMATICS

WELCOME TO THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

“As are the crests on peacocks, as are the gems on the heads of snakes, so is mathematics at the head of all knowledge”

                                                Vedanga Jyotisa (c. 500 BC)

…”no person can consider themselves educated without some measure of understanding of the basic ideas of mathematics.”

                                                James Taylor (1970)

We have an experienced and dedicated specialist group of staff.

The department comprises of:
Mr Warr – Head of Mathematics
Miss Worthy -  Second in Department
Miss Scriven -  Teacher of Mathematics
Mrs King - Teacher of Maths
Mr M Stamp - Teacher of Mathematics, ICT and Assistant Head of 6th Form

The Mathematics department prides itself on its resources, the members of the team, the atmosphere created in the classroom and the educational challenges that it organises. The classrooms that the Mathematics department are based in are well equipped with whiteboards, projectors and full video capabilities, they have many displays of  pupils’ work and provide an effective teaching and learning space within the college. We have a number of dedicated computer resources which are licensed for the whole college site.

As a department we are fully committed to teaching and learning, encouraging students to learn about and learn from the variety of mathematical concepts introduced to them.

We aim to:

  • Set challenging targets with high expectations for all pupils.
  • Offer a variety of approaches to teaching and learning to engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation.
  • Smooth the transition for pupils between Key Stages and ensure progression in teaching and learning throughout their time at Blessed Robert Johnson.
  • Explore enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics.

The Mathematics Department  seeks to ensure that at the end of his/her mathematical education in this school, each pupil will be able:

  • To perform basic numeracy skills
  • To perform the basic mathematical skills needed in his/her chosen career or for entry to higher or further mathematical education
  • To understand the mathematics likely to be encountered in daily adult life
  • To reason clearly and logically, and to set out a rational argument
  • to identify patterns encountered in diverse situations and to extrapolate from these.
  • to approach problems systematically, choosing appropriate techniques for their solution.
  • To follow logical instructions clearly expressed
  • to experience satisfaction in and enjoyment of his/her mathematical achievements.
  • To obtain any formal mathematical qualifications needed for his/her chosen career
  • To obtain his/her best possible results at KS3, KS4, AS/A Level & other Sixth Form courses.

In addition, we hope that pupils will acquire the logical abilities characteristic of a mathematician.

CURRICULUM

KEY STAGE 3

The students follow the National Secondary Strategy Numeracy program.

GCSE

All students follow a modular GCSE course, following the AQA specification.
The first module covers Statistics and Probability
The second module covers Number  at the Foundation tier and includes some algebra at the Higher tier.
The final module covers Algebra and Geometry

Year 10
Students take the first Module examination in November of year 10 and the second Module examination in June.

Year 11
Students take the final module examination in June of year 11.

AS and A LEVEL

Students follow the modular AQA A level course.

Year 12
Students follow the Core 1 program and take the examination for this unit in January.
They also follow Core 2 and Statistics 1, these are examined in June.

Year 13
In this year the students follow Mechanics 1, which is examined in January and Core 3 and 4, which are examined in June.

The department also offers Further Mathematics to the best students.

In addition the department encourages the best students in each year group to enter for the National Mathematics Challenges.

Junior Mathematics Challenge
The best of year 7 and year8 take this each year.

Intermediate Mathematics Challenge
The top ten from years 9, 10 and 11 take this each year.

Senior Mathematics Challenge
This is for years 12 and 13, although talented students in years 10 and 11 can also have a go.

To enable our students be as successful as possible, we organise revision sessions for years 9, 10 and 11 as they approach their examinations. We also provide a range of revision materials.
