Year 7 Modules

Y7 Food
This module is the first half of the Licence to Cook module and allows students to develop their understanding of healthy eating. The module also develops a range of basic practical food skills and awareness of how to work safely in a practical food environment.

Y7 Graphics Intro Module
This module allows students to develop a range of graphic skills both using hand graphic techniques and Computer Aided Design via the 2D Design tools package. These skills will be used and developed throughout the KS3 Modules

Y7 Wind Chime Project
During this module students develop their understanding of the design process. The students use hand graphic skills and soft modelling prior to manufacturing their wind chime design using sheet metal shaping techniques

Year 8 Modules

Y8 Food
This module is the second half of the Licence to Cook module and allows students to further enhance their understanding of healthy eating. The module also develops a range of more complex practical food skills and awareness of how to work both efficiently and safely within the time constraints of a single lesson

Y8 Jungle theme park
This module allows students to respond creatively to the need of a design brief. The brief is to design and manufacture a prototype using scrap materials to promote special events at a new jungle theme park such as face painting or puppet shows

Y8 ProDesktop
This module allows students to develop their ability to draw 3D models using the ProDesktop 3D CAD package. The module introduces basic skills such as creating simple shapes and then extruding them to create 3D Models before moving onto more complex shapes that have cut-outs and adjustments such as chamfers and rounded edges. The students then learn to dimension their shapes and be able to adjust their shapes retrospectively

Year 9 Modules

Y9 Enterprise
This module is based on the BBC Young Apprentice “Cup Cake Challenge” task. The students are introduced to the business elements of the design process while running their own small enterprise challenge in teams. This gives students a taste of GCSE Business Studies while also allowing students to link Business Studies to Product Design

Y9  ProDesktop
This module continues to enhance students understanding of the CAD package and allows them to assemble different parts that have been drawn in ProDesktop. The students then learn some more complex techniques such as revolve, sweep and loft a drawn profile

Y9  Day at the Beach
This module allows students to solve real life problems through creativity. The students identify problems encountered when people go to the beach and then design and manufacture a prototype solution. This module is a taster module for the unit 2 component of the GCSE Product Design course

GCSE Product Design

The OCR Product Design course is a 4 Unit course which each Unit contributing 25% of the overall marks available. The Course encourages students to be creative in solving problems in each of the design based tasks Unit 1, 2 & 3. While the Unit 4 exam encourages students to look much more at current Product Design and how designers today are influencing the style and usability of products. The exam also gives students an opportunity to look at iconic designers such Jonathan Ive and James Dyson and identify how they have created such industry changing products such as the iPod,  iMac and dual cyclone vacuum cleaners.
