Extra-curricular Activities

At BRJ we are very committed in offering our pupils and students a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. The timetable below outlines what is offered at BRJ.

Active boys and girls

In addition to the timetabled event once a year over 6 weeks a programme is run for pupils called active boys and girls. This allows pupils who would perhaps not take part in regular sporting activities to experience different activities. In the past we have had coaches from outside clubs come into school and deliver sessions on BMXing, kung fu, tae known do, golf and archery. On the final week of the programme pupils from different schools meet at Oakengates Leisure Centre and chose which activities they wish to do which include water polo, trampolining and fencing.

The Active Girls programme has had a positive impact on girl’s activity levels. We have seen more girl’s who would not normally come to after school clubs attend more activities.

Football

BRJ have very strong links with the Shropshire Football Association and as a result we are jointly running an after school football coaching programme for girls only. Throughout the summer term girls from both key stages will have the opportunity to take part in the programme which will be delivered over 8 weeks by qualified football coaches. We are also making links with our local and feeder primary schools where the girls from years 1 to 6 will also have the opportunity to take part in this programme. The secondary and primary coaching will take place alongside each other so primary school pupils will get to visit BRJ and experience our facilities first hand. All pupils will then be given a pathway into local football clubs so they can further develop their skills.

Badminton

We are currently working alongside Badminton England and have set up a mini ‘badders’ club where primary children come to BRJ on a Thursday after school from 3.40 until 4.30. This allows primary school children to either experience badminton for the first time or the further develop their skills. Following on from the primary session we also host a session for secondary pupil’s which runs from 4.30 until 6.

This project is currently set to run until the end of the summer term and hopefully will continue in September.

This project has been set up to develop club links with the Shifnal badminton club who also use the facilities on a Thursday evening. The coaching is delivered by qualified coaches with several of them playing or coaching at Shifnal badminton club. With some of the coaches actually coming from Shifnal badminton club it will hopefully encourage some of the pupils to join the club and further develop their skills.

BMXing

BRJ is to be part of the first ever British schools BMX league run by Wrekin Riders. 16 pupils from years 7 and 8 get coaching from qualified cycle and BMX coaches and then take part in a league competing against 5 others schools from across Telford. The league is to take place in June and July and hopefully BRJ will be the first ever schools BMX champions! All pupils will receive a medal and the winning school will gain the BMX champions trophy so watch this space!
