Aims

Why Science?
An understanding of the concepts of science are fundamental both to life within school and beyond the classroom, enabling students to have an informed role in society.
Scientific activity has particular thinking, practical and communication skills. These include:

  • making and testing hypotheses,
  • collecting evidence and drawing conclusions,
  • explaining phenomena,
  • critical and creative thinking,
  • solving problems,
  • making systematic observations,
  • doing experiments safely,
  • competently and carefully, searching and applying information from a variety of sources and presenting it in an appropriate way.

Science at BRJ

We believe that science is more than knowledge and concepts and goes beyond being used on a daily basis. It is fun, stimulating and meaningful. It offers new opportunities and challenges old ideas. The learner is at the core of our success. We give much emphasis to the development of thinking skills. Thinking is not always simple and easy but we believe that science is a good vehicle for the development of these skills.
Our aim is therefore to develop the concepts of science through stimulating and challenging learning opportunities.

KEY STAGE 3
Key Stage 3 Scheme of Learning is based around the WIKID scheme of learning.
In years 7, 8 students are set into groups broadly based on ability.
Students study a range of content arranged in topical areas. They also look at how science works which involves developing explanations, arguments and making decisions as well as practical enquiry.

AQA

Science courses have changed in order to provide Science teachers and students with more choice.
All students will continue to do Double Award Science through a number of routes.

CORE Science
This course covers elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and will prepare students for A Level Sciences.

Additional Science
This expands on the topics covered in the CORE and is essential for those students planning to take A Level Sciences.

BTEC First (equivalent to 2 GCSE)
Provides opportunities for learners to acquire technical and employability skills, knowledge and understanding which are transferable and will enable individuals to meet changing circumstances.
Gives learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.
Enables full-time learners to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 qualifications in Applied Science.
There is no exam for this course. All of the work will be assessed internally.
A decision about which course is appropriate for each student will be made in the summer term.
