BRJ Diocesan Pilgrimage 2007 A group of young people from BRJ Catholic College, Wellington aged 16-19 years are once again taking part in the annual Shrewsbury Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes to help as helpers for the disabled and sick. Duties include helping sick pilgrims make the journey from Wellington to Lourdes. Acting as young carers, they assist sick pilgrims in their hotels and the hospital. Also the young helpers organise and attend liturgies (masses and prayers) to make the sick pilgrims journey worthwhile. The cost to take these young helpers to Lourdes is a large amount of money. The group are always looking for fund raising opportunities. Events such as local gigs, car washing and balloon racing are a few of the many fun activities the group have in store for us all to take part in this year. In December the Lourdes group helped with the Christmas shoppers in Sainsbury’s bag packing for small donations. “I enjoy bag packing as we can actually be seen doing something positive in return for donations to our fund.” Jason Waters aged 18 Over the next few months the group would like to give presentations to local parishes not only to gain their support but to help promote the good work that is being carried out in Lourdes all the time. What difference has it made? “The thing I love about Lourdes is that everyone is accepting of everyone else. Whatever your life experience, race or beliefs we all have one thing in common, we all want to be part of something positive.” Amy Halford aged 18 It’s great to see young people doing something so positive and being recognised for their work! “Some of the most amazing conversations I have ever heard have been between 16 year old ‘youths’ and 80 year old pilgrims as they discuss their lives, faith and philosophy” Mary Roberts, Group Leader Want to find out more?
